Hey everyone,
Firstly an apology if this is something that has been covered elsewhere. I did spend some time trawling through previous posts but, as I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, searching didn't prove all that helpful! If there are any relevant existing threads, I'd be grateful for a link.
(Very) long story as short as possible, our 07 GP 2.0 HDi EGS (approx. 76k) died while joining the motorway a couple of weeks back. Got up to about 50mph coming off the slip road when it seemed to get stuck in 4th and wouldn't go any quicker, then the engine cut out altogether and hasn't started again since. No beeps or error messages on the dash and when the RAC came out and did some quick diagnostics, there were no error codes. Only prior warning was that while out and about earlier the same day, there was an intermittent 'skip' (felt kind of like something was slipping momentarily and, looking back, this had happened a few times over the preceding weeks) and at one point the engine cut out while coming to a stop and took a couple of attempts to restart. About a month prior, it cut out on my wife and wouldn't restart. The garage couldn't find anything mechanically wrong and said that it was an communication issue between the ECU and gearbox computer. They cleaned up some contacts and it had been fine since.
This time around the RAC guy suggested it could be cambelt-related but this was changed when we bought the car 6 months ago. The garage have checked it and, while they said it was ever-so-slightly slack, it was all still in alignment and they didn't think was the culprit. They are saying that there is no compression in the engine and it needs to be replaced. They advised against spending any more labour on dismantling the engine to investigate further. I guess I should point out at this point that, for what it's worth, the garage does have a good reputation locally.
I thought I'd post all this here on the off-chance that it sounds to anyone exactly like an issue they've experienced or heard of, in the hope of us avoiding a costly engine change!
On the other hand, if this does turn out to be the only option, the garage are currently struggling to source a replacement engine (in truth I don't think they're especially keen on doing the work) so we're looking into the possibility of finding one ourselves. However, it's not something I know anything about and I've got serious reservations about buying off ebay etc. I'd grateful for any recommendations for sources to try.
Huge thanks in advance for any sage words you guys can offer!
Cheers,
Liam
