Hi all,
I've searched my problem, and I do see some answers to it but the solution/remedies are varied, so I wanted to ask to try and clarify;
Can a dying/low battery cause odd issues and false fault warnings, that don't seem related?
To me if a battery is dying or dead nothing works, I seem to be getting weird things happening.
I own a 2008 C4GP 1.6hdi 110 since 2012, on Friday it failed to start and numerous faults came up all at the same time that haven't come up before, it was stuck at a friend's house.
Problems and what I've done so far:
1. Will not start, like no power going to the starting motor when you turn the key. There is power going to interior lights, dash and ignition lights, they look normal brightness.
2. Economy Mode Activated.
3. Swapped the brake pedal switch in the passenger footwell with a spare one I had. I've read these things can cause wars, so decided to start there. No joy car wouldn't start.
4. Got a lend of a Garage diagnostic machine, and I found list as long as my arm of intermittent faults, managed to clear them all.
5. With ignition on, Reverse lights stuck on, but not in reverse.
6. With ignition on, Brake lights stuck on, but pedal not depressed.
7. Tested the battery and output is 6-7V, so knowing it is too low and I've never put a battery in it in 6+ years, figured it was time to put another one in. When I tested the volts when I took the battery out, it read 12V!? Something must be draining the battery when hooked up? Certainly not the starting motor!
8. Installed another strong battery I had, which read 12V.
9. After locking and unlocking the door manually with the key as the fob battery was now completely dead, and after several attempts I managed to get the car to start. Reverse light turned off but the brake lights were stuck on(is the switch I put in faulty? Is the original one faulty? or is this a low battery issue?)
10. It wouldn't go into automatic with the selector in the A position, it went into manual itself, I assume this is limp home mode? Using the paddles, I drove the car home up to 3rd gear only and at 50kph.
11. As I drove new ABS, ESP, Auto/Handbrake, Gearbox warnings came up.
12. Parked the car on my drive, turned it off and tried to start again and it wouldn't.
13. Today I bought a new fob battery, locked the car and unlocked it in the hope I wasn't having immobiliser issues. I then turned it over, power went to the starting motor but it only clicked several times, the battery I had put in the night before was now drained, brake lights still stuck on(only with ignition on), sake, deep breaths!
14. I have the battery on charge over night, tomorrow is a new day!
Sorry for the log description, I tried to cover all aspects.
Any advice and or similar experiences welcomed.
