Poor mpg on 1.6i 16v VTR. Also slight loss of power when accelerating

Hi all, first post here but have been a member for a few months now. My C4 coupe (2005 1.6 petrol 109bhp) is my pride and joy. I am also only 17 and it is my first car! Anyway, I bought the car about 6 months ago and everything was in perfect working order, 69,000 miles etc in relatively good condition. I only passed my test last month and I have been driving about now and covered over 1,100 miles in 4 weeks! Everything works fine (apart from the boot) and the engine runs like a champ.

Having covered so many miles in such a short space of time I have noticed that my mpg is very poor on average. My average on the trip computer is 30.3. Most of my journeys are at least a 35 mile round trip, whilst others have been over 100 miles so it isn't because of short journeys. I am also an 'R' driver so it's not like I am shoeing it all of the time.

I filled my car right up on Thursday and the range said 397 miles (is this normal?). Having covered about 155 miles since then I am now one above a half tank with range now down to 235. Car has been serviced with new air filters and spark plugs etc, and although it feels slightly more agile, it doesn't seem to have improved mpg too much. I have figured out that each bar of the fuel gauge is equal to 5 litres, so just over 1 gallon and the furthest I have managed on one bar is 46.8 miles, with the lowest being around the late 20's to early 30's.

I have also noticed a slight loss of power when going up hills or picking up speed. it is as if there is a strong wind blowing against the car for about half a second then normal power resumes. It isn't very noticable and it doesn't happen all the time, it isn't a complete loss of all power, it is more like some of the engine has stopped working, its really hard to explain. Could this be related to my poor mpg? Could I have a faulty fuel pump etc?

I really love the car and am happy with my purchase, but with me still being in school it is hard to work enough hours to cover the cost of the insurance, never mind the fuel! If there is no way to improve it I may have to change it for a diesel but I love the way the car drives and looks so I am very reluctant to change. For me though it is financially straining. If it could be improved I would be extremely happy as I honestly do love the car.

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
