EGR Valve knackered?

Hi,

My '06 C4 VTR+ coupe 1.6 HDi (non dpf) has just ticked over 180k miles and has developed what I think might be a knackered EGR valve.

The car still drives very nicely and is returning a very good mpg (56.4mpg on daily commute of motorways, A & B roads) but yesterday it started hesitating momentarily while driving at constant speed (45-50 mph) and under no particular load (it's done this before, but only once in a while and nothing continued), with the hesitations getting more frequent until the ESP warning light came on. At this point I'd reached my destination so I turned it all off and left it for a few hours. After that it started and drove with no issue (ESP warning disappeared). On my return journey, the hesitations returned after ~15 miles/30 minutes and got progressively worse until all the lights on the dash came on and the engine stopped. I left it 5 mins and it restarted with no problems and I carried on with a few little coughs and 1 big cough for the rest of my journey (another 15 miles).
Today I've cleared all the fault codes, gone for a drive, had the ESP warning come back on, filled it with a tank of V-Power Nitro+ (the ESP light went off after I restarted) and put a can of Wynns EGR valve cleaner through the engine. I've taken it for a 10 mile drive and there was no issues but the following fault codes have reappeared: P0401, P0490 (both EGR) and P1459 (possibly EGR?).

So, does this sound like a knackered EGR, and more to the point, on a car with 180K on the clock, is it worth fixing/replacing? A quick search round the forums suggests they aren't easy to replace because of the fun location on the back of the cylinder head.

Thoughts anyone??

Cheers,
Chris
